Reply to It does look better.
But what I was talking about was a reply to someone who wondered why more American's use pictures of themselves then Japanese people.

Speak to oneself

Reply to That's right. but maybe "Speak to oneself" is misleading to English speakers. probably another keyword for free chatting is desirable. but i don't have an intuition to English, can anyone make a new appropriate keyword? or "Free Chatting" is ok?

This keyword originates from Japanese version. "Speak to oneself" is used as message board in it.

Speak to oneself

Keyword works like # in Twitter. This is not just a subject. And we can share keywords and talk about the same topic. You can enjoy haiku more if you use exiting keywords or make a keyword other uses can use.

Reply to Personally I like to use a caricature I drew of myself because it tends to look better as a small thumbnail than a regular picture of me.

Also in "Hatena.com", can we see Hatena's boss-dog Cinnamon Kaityo if hatena has some problems ?

Reply to I think this is because in North America, Your icon is viewed as a representation of what you look or act like, and to put a character somebody else created there is to say you are that character.
And Blogging and Micro-blogging websites tend to be viewed in a Narcissistic manner, if you're posting updates on what you're doing or thinking it can be assumed you don't mind people knowing about you via the internet.
Thus one does not feel unsafe putting a photo of themselves in the area which is viewed to represent what they look like.
This is only my theory though.
It might be the same in Japan and the reason why Japanese users use anime/manga characters and American users use their picture is some other reason.
